Check out www.give.org to evaluate charities. One thing to be aware of is that when a telemarketer calls you to ask you to give, and you do like the charity, don't give on the phone through the telemarketer, because donations made in this way are charged 80% to the telemarketer! That is their fee for making these collections on behalf of the charity. Better is to make your donation directly to the charity. If they are a local charity, this is good because you can go and see the charity, and word of mouth will probably be reliable. Charities for veterans, unfortunately, rate the worst, averaging about one third of the money you give getting to the veterans. Also, beware of retailers who collect for charities. Some of these are not on the level, and give a very small amount of the purchase price to the charity.
